Agios Nikolaos, capital of the prefecture of Lasithi, with 9.500 inhabitants is one of the most popular tourist towns in Greece. Build on the ruins of the ancient city "Lato to Kamara" it developed from an independent trade centre in the 3rd AD century to the town we know today: a place full of interest, throbbing with motion and life. The beauty here is endless with the seasons succeeding one another. The climate is unique: dry, without humidity. Having a valuable 30 year experience of organized tourism, its infrastructure matches that of any other European resort for an ideal and interesting vacation in combination with the traditional Cretan hospitality and the excellent climate.
The history of the town starts in the Minoan period. It was built around a magnificent deep blue lagoon (Lake Voulismeni) on one of the most beautiful spots in the Mediterranean and is now linked to the sea by a narrow canal. Legend has it that Athena and Artemis Vritomartis washed their hair in the deep blue waters of this lake. Its natural surrounding red rocks, scattered among the trees, turn it into a site of great attraction as one can enjoy a wonderful view sitting comfortably at any of the coffee shops next to the multi colored fishing boats.
