Agios Nikolaos, capital of the prefecture of Lasithi, with 9.500 inhabitants is one of the most popular tourist towns in Greece. The history of the town starts in the Minoan period. It was built around a magnificent deep blue lagoon (Lake Voulismeni) on one of the most beautiful spots in the Mediterranean and is now linked to the sea by a narrow canal. Legend has it that Athena and Artemis Vritomartis washed their hair in the deep blue waters of this lake. Its natural surrounding red rocks, scattered among the trees, turn it into a site of great attraction as one can enjoy a wonderful view sitting comfortably at any of the coffee shops next to the multi colored fishing boats.
