On a magnificent hill, a little east of Makria Gialos and just outside Kalo Nero (meaning “good water”), you will find the Kapsa monastery. This beautifully preserved monastery was built in the15th century by John Vincentos of Lithines; better known as Gerondoyannis (Old John). “Old John” lived and worked his entire life in this monastery and after his bereavement Old John was consecrated. His remains were buried in a chapel behind the monastery and have been dedicated to John the Baptist. Not only the monastery itself is a beautiful sight but the scenic route to Kapsas is quite remarkable too. When you drive in the direction of Kapsas we advise you to visit the pretty little town of Goudouras and then to make your way down to Kato Zakros.
