The impressive monastery of Faneromenis is nestled on a beautiful hillside just above the remains of the ancient Minoan city of Gournia, and from here you have a breathtaking view over the surrounding area. The monastery is otherwise known as the Holy Virgin Mary of Gournia and the church, located in a cave, is especially busy on August the 15th (Ascension of Mary and name day of the unmarried Maria’s). So if you happen to be in the neighborhood around August the 15th, than you shouldn’t pass up on the opportunity to visit this interesting monastery and be part of a great celebration. The monastery dates back to ancient times; the Byzantine period to be more precise. It vaguely resembles a fortress, as it did not only function as the house of God but also as the headquarters of the resistance during the Turkish occupation. The school, which was on the grounds of the monastery as well, acted as a safe house during the Turkish occupation and this is where Rodanthi learned to read and write. Later on Rodanthi became famous for her wage war against the oppression of the Turks.
