THE CONSEQUENCES

Fifteen years of research has shown that Crete has the lowest death rate irrespective of the cause of death. The above quotation by the French research professor Serge Renaud illustrates the consequences of Cretan nutrition and constitutes part of the large research project undertaken by seven countries which began in 1956 subsequent to the original nutritional research project Ancel Keys.

In the first illustration (Ancel Keys 1986) there is a comparison made of deaths in eight different regions of the world among which are four Mediterranean regions. Crete has the lowest number of deaths and the difference between this island and any other region is marked.

Today the international scientific community has adopted the Cretan diet as a model and recommends it unreservedly as the basis for healthy human nutrition. The graphs that follow indicate the mortality rates from heart disease and cancer.

In the second illustration a comparison is made of the results of the study contucted by seven nations in 1956 and the results given by the International Health Organisation from a sample of 1.000,000 inhabitants (Serge Renaud 1995). Crete again shows the lowest death rate.
