The island of Mochlos was frequently inhabited between the early Minoan 1 period [ca 300bc] to the present day.
For much of the time the island was connected by a land bridge to the mainland.
Three small fish tanks cut into the coastal bedrock indicate that the sea level in the late Hellensitic period [ca 100-31 bc] was some 2 meters lower than today.
Thus for most of the major periods of occupation, the island actually formed the head os a small isthmus protection one of the best natural anchorages on the north coast of Crete.
Finds from all periods of occupation suggest that the communities were organized to take advantage of this harbour.
